We’re proud to share that OpenMined was among the select organizations invited to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) event on “Opportunities at the AI Research Frontier,” held on May 6, 2024.
A Gathering of AI Leaders for National Progress
The event brought together key stakeholders from across the AI ecosystem to recognize two significant milestones in the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to leverage the benefits of AI for all Americans:
- The first round of the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot awards
- The release of the PCAST report, “Supercharging Research: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Meet Global Challenges“
As one of 26 industry contributors invited to the gathering, OpenMined joined representatives from government agencies, Congress, academia, and industry leaders to discuss the future of AI research and development in the United States.
Advancing Responsible AI Through Collaboration
The event highlighted how the NAIRR Pilot, established by Executive Order 14110, enhances U.S. AI research capacity through strong government and industry partnerships. The discussion emphasized the importance of industry resource contributions and encouraged researchers to tackle bigger questions while ensuring societal challenges are addressed.
During the event, NSF announced the first 35 awards of NAIRR computing time to research participants through the NAIRR Pilot on DOE and NSF advanced computing systems. These initial researchers are using cutting-edge methods to investigate responsible AI and advanced research domains in the public interest across various sectors.
Looking Forward
We look forward to continued collaboration with government agencies, research institutions, and industry partners to advance AI research that prioritizes privacy, security, and the public interest.
